Dear Jennifer,
These recent years have been an interesting time to be a woman in the United States. From getting the right to vote, to emerging in the workplace, to women going into space, becoming Supreme Court Justices, US Surgeon Generals, and Secretary of States, the opportunities for women are becoming greater everyday. I know you will have even more opportunities than I had as a young girl. The Women’s Movement has brought together women of all different backgrounds and made them work towards a common goal. Through this, there have been successes, like Roe v. Wade, Taylor v. Louisiana, United States v. Virginia, and Phillips v. Martin Marrieta Corp., to failures such as still waiting for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Even with some failure, the women’s movement has still brought on a great change and allowed women to take on any role in society they wish to play whether it is as a mother or as a career woman. The important thing is that women came together and worked to make things better for girls to come. If only everyone could feel like we did, the world would be a more equal place.
Though we have had many successes, there is still much to be done to achieve equality. Women still lag behind men in equal pay, only earning 81 cents on every dollar a man makes. I would love to see equal pay for equal work. Another thing that needs to be worked on is discrimination against working mothers. I see great things in your future. You and your sisters can work together towards gender equality and you can succeed. I want to see women running for higher positions and ultimately a woman becoming President of the United States. I know your generation can continue the tradition of working towards a better world and can achieve all of your goals.
With Love,
Marissa S.
